Finding an external engagement

The first thing we had to do was find a live brief or client to produce work for. We had to find something specific to our field of creativity, for me that was something reared toward games. I looked around the Internet for different games related art competitions, these being what I found:

These were some others I thought sounded interesting too, just in case there wasn't any games related ones:

I was originally planning to pick the artstation competition for character concept designs, however unfortunately the concept section was already closed for judgment and so I couldn't enter. I decided I'd place myself outside my comfort zone and choose the Blizzard competition, which requires you to create a 3D model for an existing game "World of Warcraft". The character has to be an original idea for an NPC, using existing information about the game (the style, races and appearances). The model has to be fully rendered to be submitted. I haven't 3D modelled a human character prior to this, or used the 3D modelling program 'NoMad' so this competition will be a first for everything. The deadline is after November 8th, so I don't need to worry about submitting before the course deadline.

The Brief:

The first thing I did when starting my entry, was research World of Warcraft, as it's not something I've played before and my knowledge is slim. However I only needed info on different NPCs such as what roles they take on, so I know which type I want to make. I also needed to know which races were in World of Warcarft as in most fantasy role plays it can be anything from regular human to a 7 foot ogre or an elven woman.

I looked at the above page on their official website to find out different races, what they look like, what colour scheme to they have, do they have a uniform etc.

I chose the undead, as that seemed the most fun to me and I could get a lot of ideas on the top of my head straight away. I asked Stacey and Zoe before I made a start if they had a particular uniform or look and if NPCs can even be any race, as they have played World of Warcraft a lot. They don't need a uniform or to be a certain race, which gave me a bit more creative freedom. I wanted to keep the design relatively simple as I didn't want to bite off more than I can chew on my first time modelling, so I took to Pinterest to make a moodboard and get a feel for what I was going for.

I had a section for existing World of Warcraft characters to see how they typically look and then one for general undead character design as extra inspiration. I definitely liked the idea of a skeleton or use of bones for the design, as that's what I tend to picture when I hear undead. I wanted also to lean toward a grim reaper esque look too with distressed and dishevelled clothing and hair.
