creative process yr2

what is the creative process?
The creative process is the timeline of thinking, researching and experimenting to ultimately end up with a final product. Everyone's process is different and it isn't always linear as sometimes you don't end up with the final result you want first try.

Pastiches:

Pastiches are a piece of work that imitated the style of another piece of work. I chose Goya's "Saturn Devouring a Son" as it is a renound piece of work that has been humourously replicated in many styles and mediums. It's really interesting to see how changing one element of the piece can subvert the whole meaning of the image.

My model of the creative process

Drawing ten words

Identifying a creator in my field's creative process
Character designers

Masahiro ito- observes people and thinks outside the box to reimagine them monsters, taking the mundane and trying to twist it.

Takayoshi Sato- looks in the mirror to picture expressions/poses when sketching and uses himself as a muse.

In my own work I very much observe people and myself when drawing, I use inspirations in a very similar way tryin to take normal things and subvert them and using myself as a tool to visualise what i want to create.

Philosophy- it is the study of knowledge, it's a theory that acts as a guiding principal.

The undeerpinnings of philosophy are the supporting ideas behind something and the justifications behind an idea. In game design/art, the concepts underpin the game, as it's the throries and ideas that drive the overall thing.

paradigm- is a distinct set of concepts and theories. The paradigm of art could be seen as painting. A paradigm shift could be a 3D model, as it's still art but the way it's made has shifted.

Group discussion about sociology, psychology, economics, marketing, ethnography, anthropology, geography and history

sociology is the study of society, humans live in society because there is strength in numbers and we are social creatures, we rely on eachother and few could survive alone.

psychology- Is the study of the mind. In terms of our professions, animators use psychology tricks like shapes and colour schemes to make a viewer predetermine a character's personality from its appearence. example: a triangluar shaped green scheme character would indicate a mean and evil character whereas a character with big eyes would be considered cute because psycologically we think they are like a baby.

economics- Is money essentially. Money is what drives society as it controls the sort of hierarchy there is established in it. The more you have the higher status and better off you are. In terms of our profession we study and work towards getting the position we want because somewhere in our interest is the money factor. You need money essentially to survive and thrive in society, people are more inclined to work for a living if it's something they enjoy.

marketing and ethnography- the two go hand in hand because marketing is selling a product and ethnography is people's customs and preferences. As humans we are programmed to have a tribal mindset that dates back to primate times, that has adapted into what we know now as different ethnicities and cultures. We try in modern day to be accepting and welcoming to people outside our own culture but we will always subconciously be apprehensive as it's unfamiliar to us. In marketing, brands and companies try to create a concept of a brand you can trust by adheering to our likes and what's most familiar to us.

geography- Again links to the tribal mindset, we stick to what we know and steer away from what we don't as a survival instinct. The place around you impacts how you interact with others and the things you like and dislike because the culture and place influences you. My worldview, experiences, likes, dislikes and opinions would be very differing from someone halfway across the world for example.

history- History impacts your views and opinions, like for example someone that grew up during World War II may have a different opinion on the country of Germany and a predetermined judgement on German people, compared to someone born ten years ago that wouldn't have lived through all that happening and hold the same initial distrust and dislike as they didn't see it happen or experience Germany or Germans being bad people.

Group discussion on accepted norms in art

canon of art- A canon is something of an idea or standard, it's an accepted principle. In art this can refer to the movements and periods throughout art history, like the renaissance and the surrealist movements.

zeitgeist- It is whatever is symbolic of a certain time, like in terms of art, digital art has been arguably the zeitgeist of the last decade.

dogma- is any belief held with certainty, it's an established opinion. In terms of art, there is the belief that as of recent time art movements have died at the hands of the creation of digital.

We talked about different ages and movements in art and how it doesn't seem that in recent years there were any art movements. With the age of digital media we have moved into a dark age in creativity fuelled partially by the introduction of ai art to the creative world. meaning people don't even have to create art anymore, which harbours a fear among creatives that they'll be replaced eventually by technology.

Baby eyes

The first thing I notice is surprisingly not the people but the arches, there are a lot of them strung along the width of the painting. It however, does then bring my eyes down to the cluster of figures, some dressed more than others, there are also men big and small both down on earth and up in the sky surrounded by clouds.

My 10 things
10 things- I tried throughout to link them as suggested, there is a brief description of why I like these things, I tried to keep it broad to show the wide range of things that I like.

Intuition and not knowing
original- image containing a word, taken outside the university doors.
Word: sex
Integrated it within the image to look like it was apart of the words on the glass to subvert the meaning of it.
original- image containing a number, taken acrossthe road from the university.
word: extinct
Pairing two negative things, 666 is associated typically in the media with the devil and extinction is nature's devil.
original: an image containing nature, taken on the path to the university entrance.
Word: defendant
One tree is bare whilst the other is full of leaves,  the bare tree is defending itself against its better off counterpart.
original: an image containing an animal, Strix is definitely one, which I mean in the most endeering way possible.
Word: circular
The word circulate circling around the circular nature of the beanie.
original: an artistic image
word: parralel
The tiles on the floor are parallel, I'm pointing at them and Amber is mesmerised about the fact they are.

Ways of seeing videos:

A 1972 series, focasing on art criticism.

He starts by talking about how we see and how that determines what we know. He explains how monatary value has distorted the real meanings of imagery. He then follows by talking about nudity in western media and how it subsequentially objectifies women and how photography pioneers this narrative. In another chapter he talks about the power of money and how something like a painting has ownership value, he elaborates on art and ownership by highlighting the culture of consumerism within our society and how advertisment photography aids this.

A charitable organisation:

1 org I think this foundation could benefit from my research as they aim to strive for fairer and stronger bonds in communities. My dissertaion aims to highlight the gaming industry and how women are at a disadvantage within it I want to investigate why it's such an unfair industry and what we can do to solve it.

Over the course of this module, I have learnt a lot about the creative process, especially in terms of my own specific practice. I learnt about how everything around me influences not only me as a person but how I approach my practice as a whole. I enjoyed the practical exercises like the illustrating words in creative ways as it got me in the mindset of thinking outside the box about things, which in terms of games and illustration can be useful to think about how to subvert meanings and look at things from a different angle to create something unique. I found looking into theories and philosophy and relating it in terms to art a little challenging, as I found it hard to draw a link between the definition and how it would correlate to our specific practice. I also struggled a little when it came to group discussions as I found the content hard to navigate and draw information from. In future modules I think I would benefit by engaging more in group discussion verbally to remain following the discussion and maybe if there are phrases I don’t completely understand I could benefit from discussing them verbally and simplified with classmates. I think the subjects we covered over the course of this module will definitely help me and be carried through to future projects as I will be a lot more aware of how the things around me impact me and can be used to my advantage to create unique and hopefully meaningful pieces. I surprisingly found the “Ways of Seeing” videos useful as they strangely related to what I want to explore within my dissertation, in terms of women and the systematic objectification of them through the media. The outline we had to make of our dissertation proposal also helped me a lot along with the research proposals to break down exactly what I want to explore and find out in my dissertation and I’m happy we did them as it gives us a head start in the third year with the solid foundation that’s been built. I know that when it came to looking into resources for my proposal however, I struggled to find physical resources like books. I did end up finding a way around it can be scholarly articles but I think that in the third year I may try to incorporate theory and philosophy books that can relate to the theme I am delving into. Another issue I ran into was that halfway throughout doing my blog it deleted itself and disappeared. In the third year I will definitely make sure to backup my blog elsewhere or on something like a pendrive to make sure this doesn't happen in the future.
